The Last Day?
Posted 3 months ago
Well, from what I understand, today is the last day, and at some point the voting will end and a winner will be announced.
I won\'t lie and say I don\'t care if I win or not... of course I care and I would LOVE to get this opportunity.
That being said, regardless of whether we win or lose, I have a completely revived sense of purpose with regards to both making music and teaching it.
The love and support all of you have shown throughout this whole journey has been nothing short of inspirational. And I cannot thank you enough.
So regardless of the outcome, I sincerely hope that all of you will keep in touch through the various outlets we have now.
Again - my deepest thanks and best wishes are with you always.

My Friends
Posted 4 months ago
I\'ve heard it said that a man is considered successful in life based on the number of people he calls \"friend.\"
The first time in my life that point was really driven home was back in 2004, when my grandfather passed away (I share my name with him, and my dad.)
My Grandfather was a preacher and professor of theology most of his life. He spent his career working to teach others, and to help them in their daily lives. People from all backgrounds and all walks of life would come to see him and talk to him and learn from him.
At his memorial service, I was shocked to see just how many people whose lives he touched. The crowd that gathered filled the room and stood wherever they could find space to show their love and respect for him.
He loved music as well, and even played a little trumpet as a young man. And he always encouraged my love for music. He also knew how much I enjoyed teaching, it was a common bond I shared with he and my father over the years.
What I never fully appreciated until this competition is how valuable the friends I have made through teaching and playing music are to me.
There are so many comments on this website and so many votes from people I have never met face to face, yet who I feel I know personally and feel I can call my friends.
The support you have all given to help with our cause of getting to Chicago is nothing short of inspirational.
I wish I could thank each and every one of you personally, and I certainly do try at every opportunity.
And I have realized that I am more \"successful\" than I ever dreamed already.
Where you\'ll find me

I\'ve received several emails asking me where to find my music.
I\'m on itunes, so you can find anything off of my first CD there.
The Live in Poland CD is not on itunes because the licensing is such a pain with the cover tunes. But you can find the CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/griffhamlin2

Couple of new tunes

I posted up a couple of new tunes because some people asked for them.
Running On was recorded on my Poland tour in 2004. Yeah, there\'s a lot of notes there. We were just having fun and got a little carried away.
The other one is the last tune from my 1st CD from way back in 2001. It\'s the only slow blues tune I\'ve ever written. Hope you like it.
Huge thanks to my fans and students around the world. To say I\'m humbled is an understatement. You guys (and gals) are inspiring me to play harder than ever.

Wow....

To those of you who think I\\\'ve somehow cheated the system, I\\\'m flattered that you think I might be that clever.
The simple fact is that I sent out a lot of emails yesterday to all of my students, friends, and fans. I thought that was the way this was supposed to work.
I am honored and humbled by the incredible response from everyone who has voted for me. I really hope this works out and I can thank you all from the stage in Chicago.

I was born when I was very young....
No, really, it was 1971 in Fulton, Missouri.
Growing up my whole family played instruments. My dad played piano, his brother plays just about everything. Family gatherings were never around the TV, always around music stands.
I started guitar at 9, starting playing professionally and teaching at 15 at Liberty Music in Framingham, Mass.
After high school, moved out to California and started college as... what else but a computer science major.
So after the longest year of my life I dropped out and started playing bar gigs, weddings, corporate events, anything that came along. I also continued to teach as many as 70 students per week.
In 1993 I got really heavy into the blues thing thanks to my bass player Mark. We were playing some classic rock stuff together and turned me onto Robben Ford. That pretty much changed me forever.
We started playing as \"The Griff Hamlin Band\" in and around southern California for many years. In 2001 we came out with a CD full of tunes I wrote and continued to play all around in support of that.
In 2004 I got an opportunity to go to Poland and tour all over the country, culminating with a headline spot at the Galicja International Blues Festival. That gig later turned into a 2nd CD, Live in Poland.
I went back again in 2005 for a month and had a great time as well. But in 2006, with my wife, Laura, pregnant with my son, I decided to lay low and stay home for a while.
Since I had always taught as my main gig, it made sense to start doing the lessons online. The technology wasn\'t ready for doing it in real time so I started making downloadable and DVD lessons.
Since 2006 I\'ve focused primarily on the online lessons. I\'ve been fortunate enough to play all over the world, and now with \"students\" all over the world I still get the same rush - but from my den.
Now that my little boy is almost 4, I\'ve rounded up a couple of new members - Chris Atchley on drums and Quinton Hufferd on the keys. And we\'ve started playing under the Alpaca Love Society name.
We\'ve started playing regularly in Orange County and will be working on some new material as time permits. For now I\'m really excited to be playing again with some fantastic musicians. I\'m looking forward to seeing what comes out of it.
My music is not always traditional sounding, and I make no apologies for that. The blues to me is a feeling and a spirit that lives within your soul and comes out through your instrument. It is not bound by any covenant that dictates how it is to be played.
